Mam Tor is a high peak which dominates the skyline to the west of the village of Castleton in the Peak District.
Mam Tor is also known as the "Shivering Mountain" because of the landslides which occur on its eastern side (visible on the right side of the fell in the above picture) facing towards Castleton and the Hope Valley. This is in effect a hill on the move, and despite determined remedial efforts by civil engineers the former A625 trunk road which passed by it was eventually abandoned in 1979 due to ongoing shale slippage. Motor vehicles are now diverted down Winnats Pass following a single track road which is unsuitable for heavier traffic.
Below Mam Tor is a smaller limestone hill which contains veins of Blue John, a rate flourite mineral which is still mined at the Blue John and Treak Cliff Caverns. This is believed to be the only place in the world where Blue John occurs..
