Winnats Pass

Deep limestone gorge with motocycle on road

Winnats Pass is a spectacular limestone gorge near the village of Castleton in the Peak District.

The gorge is believed to have formed as a glacial meltwater channel, but is now dry with drainage presumably going underground in the karstic terrain. The single track road which leads down the gorge is now the only route available for motor vehicles to take descending from the west down in to Castleton and the Hope Valley, the former A625 trunk road having been permanently closed due to landslides at Mam Tor.

At the foot of the pass is Speedwell Cavern (entrance building pictured above), one of four show caves in the Castleton area.
