Castleton is a village which lies at the foot of Mam Tor and Winnats Pass in the Peak District.
The village is famous for its caves, mines and potholes, no less than four of which are open to the public as show caves. These are Peak Cavern, the Speedwell Mine and Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and the Blue John Mine and Cavern. [N.B. Blue John is a rare type of flourite, a semi precious mineral which is found only in the hill in which the latter two caves are located. Prized since antiquity, Blue John is still mined in Treak Cliff and the Blue John Mine to this day!]
Towering above Castleton is Perveril Castle, which perches above a deep limestone gorge at the head of which the gaping mouth of the entrance to Peak Cavern is located.
