The Heights of Abraham is a limestone outcrop which towers over the spa town of Matlock Bath.
Access is provided by cable car to a point below the summit, where there is a tower providing fine views over Matlock and Matlock Bath in the gorge below.
There are several mined caverns here, two of which are open to the public as show caves. These are as follows:
Entered and exited through mined tunnels, the Great Masson Cavern opens up as a natural chamber which is rich in mineral deposits (although most of the lead ore known as "galena" for which the caves were originally mined has been effectively removed).
The Great Rutland Cavern contains another natural chamber which has been mined over the centuries. Like the Great Masson Cavern this is rich in mineral deposits such as e.g. iron ore, calcite and flourspar.
