On a side street just off the market square in Thirsk is a fine Georgian style building which was once the surgery of the veterinary practice of Alf Wight, the Yorkshire vet who becames famous under the pseudonym of James Herriot, whose series of books set in and around the local area became famous worldwide.
Today the building is a museum dedicated to the life and work of James Herriot.
