Overlooked by Stanage Edge, Hathersage is a pleasant village which lies in the Hope Valley at the eastern edge of the Peak District.
The village is famous for its heated outdoor swimming pool and also for its associations with Charlotte Bronte, who stayed at the vicarage here with her friend Ellen Nussey (who was the local vicar's sister) while she was writing Jane Eyre.
Charlotte took much of the inspiration for Jane Eyre from places in the area; it is believed for example that nearby North Lees Hall became "Thornfield Hall", Brookfield Manor became "Vale Hall". Meanwhile the landlord of the George Inn (now the George Hotel - pictured above) which was at the time a coaching inn where Charlotte would have arrived on her travels) gave his name to the fictional village of "Morton" in the novel.
Little John - one of Robin Hood's band of "Merry Men" is said to be buried in the churchyard of Hathersage Church.
