Captain James Cook was one of Britain's greatest mariners.

Born in 1728 in the village of Marton (now a suburb of Middlesbrough), Cook grew up at a farm in Great Ayton before working in Staithes and then starting his apprenticeship in Whitby where his distinguished career in the navy began.
