Derwent Reservoir

Situated in the "Dark Peak" area of the Peak District just above Ladybower, Derwent Reservoir is famous for having been used by the 617 "Dambusters" Squadron for practicing the low level flying required for the Barnes Wallis designed "bouncing bomb" raids on dams in the Ruhr and Eder valleys in Germany during the Second World War.

A memorial at the dam (which was used for target practice prior to the actual raids) commemorates 617 Squadron and the "Dambusters" raids of 1943.
