The Sycamore Gap is a dip in the terrain followed by Hadrian's Wall near Steel Rig, so called because of a prominent sycamore tree which grew there.
This is a picturesque location which was used for a scene in the 1991 movie Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner in the title role.
Sadly in the autumn of 2023 the sycamore tree was mysteriously felled, with the damage making the national news. At the time of this update (29th September 2023) the motive for this act of apparent vandalism remains unknown.
