Now lying within the county of Cumbria, Appleby in Westmorland is situated in the Eden Valley on the Settle Carlisle Railway near the very north western edge of the "Yorkshire" dales region.
The town is well known for hosting the Appleby Horse Fair (pictured above) - an annual gathering of travellers which usually takes place sometime at the beginning of the summer.
