Just north of Bridlington Flamborough Head is a rocky chalk headland offering picturesque coves and numerous sea caves. Beyond Flamborough this headland rises to over 400 ft at Bempton Cliffs, a famous seabird colony and the highest sea cliffs on the east coast of Britain.
In 1779 the sea off Flamborough Head was the scene of a fierce naval battle in which British forces engaged with the American revolutionary supporter John Paul Jones. Although Jones' ship, the "Bonhomme Richard" was sunk, Jones himself escaped to the continent.
