Lying just inland at Boulby is the entrance site of the Boulby Potash Mine, one of the deepest mines in Europe, and now site of the UK Dark Matter Collaboration particle physics experiment, which attempts to discover postulated and otherwise elusive particles known as "WIMPs" (Weakly Interactive Massive Particles) or "neutralinos".
