To the south of Holme Moss lies the deep valley of Longdendale - immediately to the east of Stalybridge, Mottram and Glossop (at the eastern edge of the Manchester conurbation).

Towering above the valley is the "Dark Peak" of Kinder Scout - the first major ascent encountered on the Pennine Way long distance footpath route from Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland.
