Hathersage Church lies at the top of a steep lane just off the main road which passes through the village of Hathersage.
Adjacent to the Hathersage Church is the former vicarage (now a private residence), where Charlotte Bronte stayed with her friend Ellen Nussey while she was writing Jane Eyre.
In the churchyard of Hathersage Church is a grave which is claimed to be that of Little John - one of Robin Hood's band of "Merry Men". [N.B. Robin Hood himself is said to be buried in Mirfield in the Kirklees area of West Yorkshire - an area which also has associations with the Brontes.]
Several of the graves in the churchyard bear the name "Eyre" - "Eyre" being a name local to the Hathersage area which was chosen by Charlotte Bronte for the surname of Jane in the eponymous novel.
